We thought of squeezing all case-related information into a single screen because we felt having everything in one place would make it easier for the user to access basic details without shuffling between different screens.

Sounds like things are going smoothly, right? Wrong.

The UI overwhelmed all the stakeholders.

We had a bunch of design review cycles and got feedback

Yeah, it’s nice having everything in one place, but this thing’s got a steep learning curve — and honestly, we don’t have time to sit around figuring it out.

So, we took a different approach. Presenting information is essential, but it doesn’t have to dominate the interface. Instead of displaying it upfront, we chose to show it more subtly, keeping the focus on the primary task.

Since we maintained consistent whitespace throughout, we created more room for large tasks like audio transcripts, which demands focus and team collaboration.

High recall is also crucial. We minimized the user’s memory load by keeping elements, actions, and options clearly visible.

To gather user feedback, we conducted moderated testing sessions with detectives from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department with a diverse range of experience levels and investigative roles.

Fido Pen captures handwritten notes and instantly converts them into digital records. Powered by NLP and machine learning, it identifies key information and applies smart tags automatically. During interrogations, its built-in mic records audio in real time—delivering transcriptions and insights—all seamlessly synced to the system.

Twist-to-Record Mic. Rotate the pen’s head clockwise to activate the built-in microphone for instant audio recording.

Biometric Thumb Lock. Thumbprint sensor on barrel unlocks device, ensuring secure access for authorized user only.

Multi-Function Charging Dock. A sloped magnetic dock snaps pen into place—doubling as a notepad clip and portable power bank.

Designed for the Field. A compact, versatile solution that keep the pen powered and ready wherever the investigation leads.

This design uses ample white space to reduce distractions and cognitive overload. Clear visual hierarchy and improved information architecture guide users smoothly, creating an uncluttered layout that enhances scanability and decision-making.

Handwritten notes are instantly converted into digital records. Using NLP and machine learning, key details are identified and smart tags are applied automatically—organizing information into evidence, relationships, contradictions, and more. This streamlines case management and surfaces critical insights with minimal effort.
